Pet Culture
The series Pet Culture consists of cyanotype photograms that represent articles connected with pet or companion animals. Pets are layered into our daily lives physically, emotionally and economically. The booming pet-supply industry, which provides an incredible variety of goods to entertain, bathe, feed and exercise pets, reflects our obsession with and concern for our animals. For the series, I asked my friends and neighbors to lend me different items they associate with their pets. Then, in the spirit of pioneering photographer Anna Atkins, I set the articles on light sensitive paper in the sun to make photograms. As a group, these photographs help elucidate the complicated and multilayered relationships formed between people and their pets.
